COUNTRIES THAT
TRACK INTERNET ACTIVITY
Issue: Internet Reporters Without Borders, a French advocacy group,
reports that many countries attempt to control or track their residents'
online activities. The group says that filtering is just one method of
restricting access to the Internet. In Russia, for example, the government
has instituted an Internet surveillance system that requires I.S.P.'s
and telephone operators to reroute data traffic to local law enforcement
headquarters, allowing authorities to monitor phone calls or E-mail. The
Australian government does not filter the Net, but a new law forbids certain
kinds of online content, including specific representations of sexual
acts, and information on crime, violence and the use of certain narcotics.

Community
Media Network Library and Archive!
With a newly arrived librarian, CMN, The Community Media Network, is
in the process of creating a workable reference library.
We are indexing the material held at CMN, and we will soon be able to
issue a comprehensive catalogue listing and describing the videos we have
collected over the years. The videos range from material produced by CMN
like "A Day at the Races", which is an anti-racism campaign presentation,
to international community television programmes such as news items and
classes in writing skills for example.
We also have a collection of books, magazines and newspapers which are
linked to community media, and social, economic and political development
issues. There are some rare hardback books and alternative print magazines
and newspapers such as "Zebra" and "Café" which could be of value to anyone
with an interest in community media and world issues.
Our latest arrival is entitled "Making Waves: Stories of Participatory
Communication for Social Change", which is a compilation of descriptions
of community grassroots projects across the globe such as Miners' Radio
Stations or Television Serrana.
We hold many issues of Women's Publications and alternative magazines,
and we have created a variety of categories such as Travellers Issues
and Social Services in Ireland.
With a vested interest in the Internet and different areas such as word
processing and graphics, we hold a selection of user guides and magazines
to help anyone looking to improve their skills in the use of a computer.
All are welcome to drop in by appointment at CMN to visit the library
and obtain a better idea of what is happening with us. E-mail:
