MEETING ON MARS [TV-Nova]
International meeting of resistance media - round table
Workshops and knowledge exchange - projections and progammes exchange, street performances and direct action from the 22nd to the 25th of March
Nature is a business, consumerism is life, war is peace...
All attempts to contradict the status quo, to support those who are opposed to this, and want to create a different world, are acts of resistance. The world over, the voices of dissent are beginning to be heard: pirate TV, independent radio, webzines, fanzines, and video activism produces and diffuses a non-commercial message thereby re -acquiring our justified place in the media domain. Every day is a struggle to gain the ways and means to exist and create. To expand and co-operate together, the new media's are laying the foundations for a network of solidarity, exchange of ideas, and partnership.
These 3 days contribute to the organization of an international network where everyone can benefit from the experiences of others: political and theoretical experience by way of "round table" debates, practical and technical experience via numerous workshops, content and informative material with projections and available copying facilities. Its all happening the CAT (centre for alternative careers), a building occupied since December 2001, where the PRIMITIVI crew have recently installed their base of operations.
ROUND TABLES:
Friday 22nd: reception and structure.
Presentations. Projections of introductory films. Resum of previous meetings. "Proposals for a public access television channel", Tltambores (Venezuela) "the CSA and us" Zaleatv (FR) "the nova meetings" PRIMITIVI (FR) texts: Resum of the Toulouse meeting, the copyleft, the independent broadcasters licence. Contributions by INDYMEDIA on the role of "alternative" media in Brussels (trash every camera?), presentation of the "international district journal"
Organization of food/accommodation for 4 days.
Saturday the 23rd: THINK NETWORKING!!!!!
Introduction: proposal for popular media. Tltambores (Venezuela)
" Television overkills the viewer with Americanized sound and vision, exploits the spectacle of misery, fabricated from a vision of violence to create a permanent climate of repression. The population ingests this intellectual sewage forced upon them by the mass media without question: this "sense of shame to be alive" explains why popular resistance is minimal and sporadic. Tltambores wishes to be a powerful element in the portrayal of a country as yet invisible."
The attempts to elaborate on the non-marketable links at the heart of the network: copytheft, independent broadcast licensing, the author's position.
- Giving a speech or "taking the stage".
Alternative media: are they there to take the microphone
and diffuse "their" vision of the world, or to try to push a new way
to get the message across. How TV and radio as a tool can engage a community
in dynamic action: popular assembly, civil empowerment? Training by way of community
workshops. Sans Canal Fixe (FR) ClotRTv, (Barcelona) Deyavi (Madrid)...
- "Trash every camera?" Media over- activism
is killing media activism????
Since the EU summit in Brussels, the overwhelming number
of cameras seemed to de stabilize the true nature of alternative journalism
by attracting too much attention, and possibly turning these manifestations
into a kind of spectacle or show. The necessity to reflect upon our goals and
methods is urgent. Indymedia: new kids on the black block???
Sunday the 24th: Weaving a network:
Creating international links by exchanging programmes, but also by setting up long lasting partnerships. The "international district journal" : presentation and advancement of the project. AK Kraak (Berlin) launch a platform for exchanges of video programmes via the internet. Indymedia (Italy) are working on a permanent radio project fed by indymedia and other collectives providing "live and direct on the hour" reports.
The French situation and the unilateral action day (6th April) the CSA (French superior audiovisual
council) have suspended all rights concerning the diffusion of associative-television during the presidential election campaigns. Against this censorship, where only those channels on the government payroll are allowed to diffuse political content, the TSA (alternative broadcasting association) are organizing a national day of "civil disobedience", call for pirate action, and the occupation of public space across the length and breadth of the country.
Monday the 25th:
For those who wish to, we propose to discuss positive non violent direct action in the street based on a theme of censorship and FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION!!!!!!!!!! This action will be accompanied by a press conference presenting the results of the weekend's debates and calling for the mobilization of all concerned on the 6th of April 2002.
The WORKSHOPS will be spread out over the period of the weekend.
How to transmit over UHF Transmission by satellite and alternative networking.
Exquisite video corpses (don't ask, just come and see for yourself!) Video Mix. Every night, a wild selection of video entertainment will be projected on the BIG SCREEN with a 24hour copying lounge: come with your masters and blank cassettes.
